Use the Recent Hire filter

The Recent Hire filter in Market Data lets you compare compensation for employees hired in the last six months against all incumbents. Use it to see whether and by how much the market has shifted for a given role, so you can make more informed decisions about offers and band adjustments.

The Recent Hire filter is available for base salary benchmarks and for customers who are on a Market Data Pro plan.

What the Recent Hire filter shows you

When the filter is active, the benchmark table updates to show:

• Updated compensation values reflecting only employees hired in the last six months
• Percentage change badges at each level, showing how the recent hire median (50th percentile) compares to the all-incumbent median
• Statistical significance indicators that tell you whether the difference is a real market signal or likely noise

The percentage change compares the median (p50) of recently hired employees to the median of all incumbents, including recent hires. For example, if the all-employee p50 for a role is $100,000 and the recent hire p50 is $105,000, the filter displays +5.0%.

Your existing filters (location, industry, company stage, Peer Groups) apply to both populations. If you have filtered to a specific industry, the recent hire data compares all incumbents in that industry to recent hires in that industry.

Turn on the Recent Hire filter

The Recent Hire toggle appears in the Market Data Explorer control bar when you are viewing benchmarks for a specific job family.

1. Navigate to Market Data and search for a job family.
2. Select the job family to view its benchmarks.
3. Locate the Recent hires toggle in the control bar on the right side of the page.
4. Turn on the toggle to switch to the recent hire view.

The filter is off by default. When you turn it on, the benchmark table replaces the Consistency column with a percentage change column showing the difference between recent hire and all-incumbent medians at each level.

When you change other filters (such as location or company stage), the Recent Hire filter turns off automatically. Turn the toggle back on after adjusting your filters.

When the filter is not available

Note that the Recent Hire toggle may be hidden or disabled in certain situations:

• Executive roles: The filter is not available for C-Level or VP-level roles due to lower hiring volumes at those levels.
• Insufficient data: When there is not enough recent hire data for the current set of filters, the toggle is disabled.
• No statistically significant data: When Pave's data does not show a statistically significant difference between recent hire compensation and the all-incumbent benchmark for ANY data point on that page, the toggle is disabled.

Some role, level, and location combinations that have data in the all-incumbent view may show insufficient data when the Recent Hire filter is active. This is because the filter displays only raw benchmark data. Calculated Benchmarks are not generated for recent hire slices.

Read the percentage change badges

Each level in the benchmark table displays a badge showing the percentage difference between the recent hire median and the all-incumbent median. Badges are color-coded based on statistical significance:

• Green: The recent hire median is higher than the all-incumbent median, and the difference is statistically significant. This indicates the market is likely moving upward for this role and level.
• Red: The recent hire median is lower than the all-incumbent median, and the difference is statistically significant. This indicates the market is likely moving downward for this role and level.
• Gray: There is a difference between the two medians, but it is not statistically significant. The difference may be noise rather than a real market shift.

Pave uses a 90% confidence threshold to determine statistical significance. When a difference is labeled significant, there is less than a 10% chance the gap is due to random variation rather than an actual market movement.

Compare benchmarks in chart view

You can also compare recent hire and all-incumbent data visually. Turn on the chart view while the Recent Hire filter is active to see a side-by-side comparison.

The chart displays paired box plots for each level, with one representing all incumbents and the other representing recent hires. Percentage change badges appear above each pair, showing the median difference. This view lets you compare across all percentiles (25th, 50th, 75th, 90th), not just the median.
