## Overview

When you need to make a compensation decision for an employee, the worksheet grid gives you the numbers, but not the full picture. The employee detail view is where you go to understand the context behind those numbers: who this person is, how their compensation has changed over time, how they compare to peers, and what other planners have said about them.

Click any employee's name in the planner worksheet to open their detail view. It opens as a full-screen overlay. Click the back arrow or press Escape to return to the worksheet.

## Getting oriented on an employee

Before adjusting compensation, you need to understand who you are looking at and whether anything requires your immediate attention.

### Employee profile

At the top of the left panel, the information card gives you a snapshot of the employee: their name, photo (if available), job title, level, manager, and location. You also see their current approval status (for example, "In worksheet" or "Submitted") and the approval chain that shows the sequence of reviewers for this employee.

### AI summary

Below the profile, an AI-generated summary (powered by Pave AI) highlights why this employee may need your attention. The summary can surface priority factors (for example, positioning relative to their compensation range, performance trends, or time since last adjustment) along with a plain-language overview of the employee's compensation context in the current cycle. You can refresh the summary, and rate it with thumbs up or thumbs down to improve future results.

### Flags and alerts

If the employee has compensation control violations, an alert icon appears next to the employee's name. Click it to see the specific issues. Red alerts are hard stops that must be resolved before you can submit your worksheet. Yellow alerts are warnings that do not block submission. You can also flag the employee yourself to mark them for additional review, and that flag is visible to other planners in the approval chain.

When you scroll down, the information card compresses to a compact view so you have more room to work with the data fields.

## Making and tracking compensation decisions

The detail view is where you review the data behind a compensation decision and make changes with full context visible alongside your inputs.

### Reviewing employee data

The left panel displays every data field configured for the cycle, organized into two collapsible sections:

* **Personal**: Profile information from your HRIS integration, such as the employee's email, manager, location, tenure, approval status, and reward letter status
* **Compensation cycle**: All compensation-related fields configured for the current cycle, displayed in a vertical layout for easier reading than the worksheet grid. This section reflects whatever your admin has configured for the cycle: salary and cash compensation fields, equity grants, performance and rating data, market positioning metrics, and any custom columns

The specific fields you see depend on how your admin configured the cycle. Every company's detail view includes a different set of columns, but they are always grouped into these two sections.

### Editing values

Editable fields work the same way as in the worksheet grid. Click a field to enter a value, or click a dropdown field to select from the available options. Changes save automatically with a brief delay.

### Tracking what changed and why

The **Activity** tab (on the right panel) shows a chronological timeline of everything that has happened for this employee in the current cycle. The timeline captures:

* Compensation value changes, showing who made each edit, which fields changed, and the old and new values
* Worksheet submissions and where the employee moved next in the approval chain
* Flags and unflag actions
* Justifications submitted for compensation control violations
* Employee returns (when an employee is sent back to a previous planner for re-review)
* Pull-ups (when a planner pulls an employee from a downstream planner, or when an employee is automatically pulled up at the end of a planning window)
* Data uploads and snapshots, including whether they overrode manually saved inputs
* Recommendation logic changes and whether the employee's values were overridden or reset
* Reward letter events (enabled, disabled, viewed, or confirmed by the employee)

Use the filter toggle at the top to narrow the timeline to **All**, **Comp changes**, or **Comments** only.

To make a well-informed raise or equity decision, you often need to see how the employee's compensation has evolved, not just where it stands today.

The **Comp History** tab displays a stacked bar chart of the employee's total compensation over time, broken down by component type (for example, base pay, bonus, variable pay, and equity). Hover over any bar segment to see exact values. Click items in the chart legend to show or hide individual components.

If the employee's local currency differs from the cycle's base currency, a toggle lets you switch between the two views.

If you have access to Total Rewards, a button opens the employee's full Total Rewards page in a new tab for a deeper breakdown beyond what the cycle view provides.

## Comparing an employee to peers

When you need to check whether a compensation decision is consistent with how similar employees are being treated, the **Peers** tab lets you compare this employee to a relevant group. This tab is only visible if your role includes permission to view peer comparisons.

### Choosing who counts as a peer

At the top of the tab, choose how peers are defined:

* **Compensation range**: Match employees who share the same compensation band (this is the default)
* **Worksheet columns**: Match employees based on shared values in specific columns (for example, grouping by department, level, location, or any other dimension your admin has configured for peer comparison). If multiple dimensions are available, a multi-select lets you refine the match

### Seeing how the employee compares

A summary card shows aggregate metrics for the peer group alongside this employee's values, with the percentage difference for each. The specific metrics depend on your cycle configuration but typically include measures of market positioning, pay increases, and performance.

Below the metrics:

* A **scatter plot** lets you choose what to plot on each axis, so you can visualize the peer group across any two dimensions. The current employee is highlighted
* A **band chart** shows where the employee sits within their compensation range relative to peers

If the employee falls outside the typical range for their peer group, an alert appears at the top of the tab.

### Acting on what you find

Click **Open in worksheet** to return to the planner worksheet with filters pre-applied to show this employee's peer group. This lets you compare peers side by side in the grid and make adjustments in context.

## Collaborating with other planners

Compensation decisions often involve input from multiple people. The detail view gives you tools to communicate with other planners directly in the context of a specific employee, so feedback stays attached to the person it is about.

### Adding comments

On the **Activity** tab, a comment input box lets you add notes to the employee's timeline. Comments support rich text formatting and @mentions, so you can tag other planners to notify them and ask for input.

### Editing and deleting comments

Hover over a comment you wrote to access the edit and delete controls. Edited comments show an "(edited)" indicator. Deleted comments are replaced with a note that the comment was deleted. Deleting a comment is irreversible.

### Reviewing the full conversation

Because the Activity timeline captures both compensation changes and comments in chronological order, you can read the full history of decisions and discussion for an employee in one place. Use the **Comments** filter to isolate the conversation from the change log if the timeline is long.

## Working through your employee list

When you have many employees to review, the detail view is designed to let you move through them without returning to the worksheet each time.

### Employee counter

In the header bar, a counter shows your current position in the list (for example, "3 of 25"). This count reflects the current filters and sort applied to your worksheet.

### Previous and next navigation

Arrow buttons next to the counter move you to the previous or next employee. The order matches your worksheet's sort and filter state, so you can filter to a specific group (for example, flagged employees or a single department) and then step through them one by one.

## Things to know

* **Changes save automatically.** Edits to compensation fields in the detail view work the same way as in the worksheet grid.
* **Navigation reflects your worksheet filters.** The employee counter and previous/next buttons follow whatever sort and filter you applied to the worksheet. If you filtered to a specific department, you navigate through only those employees.
* **Comments are visible to other planners.** Any comment you add to the activity timeline can be read by other planners who have access to this employee.
* **The Comp History tab can be disabled.** Your admin can turn off the compensation history tab for a cycle. If it is disabled, you will not see it in the tab bar.
* **Peer comparison requires permission.** The Peers tab only appears if your role includes the peer comparison permission.
* **On mobile, the layout adapts.** The left panel is not shown alongside the tabs. Instead, an additional "Employee Data" tab appears so you can access the same information.
* **The AI summary is in beta.** The summary is generated by Pave AI and may not always be available. You can refresh it or rate it to help improve future results.
