Budgets dashboard
What the budgets dashboard answers
- How much of each budget has been spent, and how much remains?
- Which planners are over or under budget?
- Which planners haven't submitted their worksheets yet?
- How is spend distributed across departments, levels, or other dimensions?
- What's the average spend per employee across different groups?
- Where is overspend concentrated, and which employees are driving it?
The budgets dashboard gives you real-time visibility into budget consumption while the cycle is running, so you can intervene before problems become permanent. It's split into two views: Budgets by Planner (tracking each planner's progress and spend) and Spend Details (analyzing how spend is distributed across your organization).
Budgets by planner
This view shows every planner's budget status in a single table, built from your approval chain hierarchy.
What you see for each planner
- Budget columns: One column per active budget, showing how much the planner has used against their allocation. If a planner is over budget and has a holdback, the overspend is shown against the holdback amount separately.
- Holdback columns: Visible when any budget has holdback amounts defined. Shows the holdback reserve and how much of it has been consumed by overspend.
- Eligible rollup: The number of eligible employees in the planner's worksheet.
- Department and level: The planner's own department and level.
- Status: Whether the planner has submitted their worksheet. Statuses include Submitted, Not Submitted, and Overdue (if planning windows are configured).
Filtering the planner table
- Over budget / Under budget: Toggle to show only planners who are over or within their allocation.
- Worksheet status: Filter by Submitted, Not Submitted, or Overdue.
- Department and level: Narrow to specific departments or levels.
- Search: Find a specific planner by name or email.
The table is expandable -- click a planner to see the planners who report to them in the approval chain, so you can trace budget consumption through the hierarchy.
Spend details
This view breaks down how budget spend is distributed across your organization using four visualizations. Select which budget to analyze using the budget dropdown at the top.
Total spend
A horizontal stacked bar chart showing the breakdown of spend by a dimension you choose (department, level, performance, gender, or any column). You can add a second dimension to subgroup the bars (e.g., spend by department, subgrouped by performance).
Toggle between absolute values and percentages to see either raw spend amounts or the proportional distribution.
Average spend per employee
A vertical bar chart showing the average budget spend per employee across the dimension you select. This surfaces groups where per-employee spend is higher or lower than expected.
For example, grouping by department shows whether engineering employees are receiving larger average raises than sales, or vice versa. Adding a subgroup by performance shows whether high performers are getting meaningfully more across all departments.
Spend vs budget (by dimension)
A comparative bar chart showing spend against budget for each group within the selected dimension. This is the same concept as the planner-level spend vs budget chart, but aggregated by department, level, or another dimension instead of by individual planner.
Overspend
A bar chart showing the distribution of overspend by dimension. This only appears for bottom-up budgets where employee-level budget allocations are defined. It shows how many employees (or how much total spend) exceeds their allocation, broken down by the dimension you choose.
Click any bar to see the specific employees driving overspend in that group.
Filtering spend details
Each chart has its own independent filters:
- Group by: Choose the primary dimension (performance, department, level, gender, etc.)
- Subgroup by: Add a second dimension for stacked or grouped visualization
- Column filters: Narrow to specific departments, levels, or other column values

Things to know
- The dashboard updates in real time. As planners make compensation decisions and submit worksheets, budget consumption reflects immediately.
- Overspend chart is conditional. It only appears for bottom-up budgets where per-employee budget allocations exist. Top-down budgets don't show this chart since budgets are allocated at the planner level, not per employee.
- Holdback absorbs overspend in the display. When a planner exceeds their budget, the main budget cell shows spend capped at the budget amount. The excess appears in the holdback column so you can see how much of the reserve is being consumed.
- Click bars to drill down. In most charts, clicking a bar filters the planner table or highlights the employees in that group, so you can quickly move from a pattern to the specific decisions driving it.
- Each chart filters independently. Changing the grouping or filters on one chart doesn't affect the others, so you can explore different dimensions simultaneously.
