Benchmarking Bulk Edits

After reviewing benchmarks, use bulk editing tools to fill gaps in your benchmark data and ensure consistent progressions. This guide covers level progression, pay zone differentials, and sidepeek actions. Auto-smoothing is covered in a separate article.

Overview

Use Benchmark Edits to fill gaps in benchmark data across your bands.

Common gaps:

  • Jobs with no survey data
  • Irregular progressions across levels
  • Missing pay zone coverage
  • Incomplete benchmark coverage

How to fill gaps:

  • Auto-smoothing - Intelligence-powered gap filling and progression smoothing (separate article)
  • Level progression - Apply consistent % increases across ranks
  • Pay zone differential - Extend benchmarks to additional locations
  • Replace job family - Re-map to different survey families

Requirements for Benchmarks

To generate a benchmark for a job, you need:

1. Ladder mapping - Job ladder mapped to survey families

2. Level mapping - Job level mapped to survey levels

3. Pay zone mapping - Pay zone mapped to survey locations

4. Data rule - Job assigned to a data rule specifying surveys and percentiles

Formula:

Ladder mapping + Level mapping + Pay Zone mapping + Data rule = Benchmark

See Reviewing Benchmarks article for details on missing mappings and data rules.

Apply Level Progression

Ensure logical progression across levels within a ladder. Level progression moves from inner levels outward (no anchor).

How It Works

Selection: Must select full ladders. Cannot apply to individual bands.

Process:

  1. Select ladder(s) in Benchmarking tab
  2. Click Apply level progression
  3. Select pay type
  4. System applies progression moving from inner levels outward
  5. Only applies to bands missing values or with irregular progression
  6. Preview changes
  7. Apply

Result: Bands progress smoothly across ranks with consistent percentage increases.

After Applying

"Level Progression Applied: X%" label shown in sidepeek per row

Updates show in:

  • Band manager view
  • Benchmarking sidepeek
  • Activity log

Apply Pay Zone Differential

Apply geographic adjustments to benchmark data.

How It Works

Selection: Can apply per ladder or per band (ultimate flexibility).

Process:

  1. Select band(s) or ladder(s) in Benchmarking tab
  2. Click Apply pay zone differential
  3. Select pay type
  4. System shows pay zone differentials being applied
  5. Uses existing logic: find and replace existing slice with primary pay zone + relative value
  6. Preview changes
  7. Apply

Result: Benchmarks adjusted for location-based differentials.

After Applying

"Geo Differential Applied: X%" label shown in sidepeek

Updates show in:

  • Band manager view
  • Benchmarking sidepeek
  • Activity log

To change weights: Must revert to edit.

Replace Job Family

Reclassify jobs to different family mapping.

How It Works

Selection: Can apply per ladder or multiple bands. Can only select rows that use the same job family mapping so the system can render what's currently being used in the modal.

Process:

  1. Select band(s) or ladder(s) with same family mapping
  2. Click Replace job family
  3. Select pay type
  4. System shows current family mapping and family mapping weight used
  5. Add optional % adjustment which is applied to composite
  6. Preview changes
  7. Apply

Result: Benchmarks recalculate using new family mapping.

After Applying

Changes stored in activity log.

To change weights: Must revert to edit (revert full ladder).

Benchmarking Sidepeek

The benchmarking sidepeek provides detailed views and editing capabilities for individual jobs.

Overview Tab

Shows:

  • Band visualization - Visual bar showing min/mid/max
  • Band mid - Current band midpoint value
  • Benchmarks - Composite benchmark value
  • Composite progression - How benchmark progresses across levels

Labels shown:

  • "Auto-smoothed" (if auto-smoothing applied)
  • "Level Progression Applied: X%" (if level progression applied)
  • "Geo Differential Applied: X%" (if pay zone differential applied)

View Details Tab

Shows:

  • Band visualization & employee details - Where employees fall within bands
  • Composite - Weighted average calculation
  • Contributing data sources - Which surveys contribute and their values
  • All percentiles in data source by default - P25, P50, P75, etc.

No data states:

  • "No data found" - Explains why data was not included for specific sources

Update Percentiles

Action: Turn on/off percentiles to be included/removed from composite

How it works:

  1. Open sidepeek for a job
  2. Go to View Details tab
  3. Toggle percentiles on/off
  4. Composite updates in sidepeek & main band view in real-time
  5. Changes saved automatically

Use when: You want to exclude certain percentiles from the composite calculation.

Manual Composite Override

Action: Manually override the calculated composite benchmark

How it works:

  1. Open sidepeek for a job
  2. Click edit icon next to composite value
  3. Enter manual value
  4. Save

Result: Manual override value used instead of calculated composite. Can be reverted anytime.
